| I'm a representational oil painter of the human figure, though I have explored many avenues from tonal impressionism to expressionism and abstraction. My general aim is to take a concern for the formal values (abstract values) in one hand and humanistic representational concern in the other. My hope is to harmoniously combine these two intentions. As far as subject is concerned, the female figure is my preference. My enjoyment of form, as well as the intimacy of the human condition in beauty of the "essential female" with as few trappings as possible. Generally I incline toward a reflective sentiment in these pictures. This quality is suggested by the disposition of the figures as well as the choice of tonalist palette. The scale of my painting is usually intimate, corresponding to the intimacy of the subject itself. The overall tone, mood, and intention of my work unquestionably represents old world values. - Steve Shapona To read an interview with Steve Click on link below http://bigcrow.com/anna/journal/stevanshapona.html |
